MOVE TOGETHER

Illustrating Movement, Joy and Connection

I recently had the pleasure of creating a pair of illustrated posters for Dance Centred, commissioned by dance practioner Sam Lawrence. The posters were made to promote ‘Move Together’ - dance sessions for women affected by cancer, running in Newquay and St Austell.

The sessions are open to women at any stage of their cancer journey. Every woman is welcomed as they are, whether moving gently from a chair, resting when needed, or dancing full-bodied across the room. That sense of acceptance and freedom was central to how I approached the artwork. From the very beginning, this felt like a project that needed care, lightness and honesty and I wanted the illustrations to reflect that.

The brief was to create two posters using photography of women who attend the classes and were happy to be featured. Additionally, a bank of illustrations that Sam and her team could use themselves in social media posts and on the website.

I started with the main type block, highlighting the ‘HER’ in ‘together’ to emphasise this was for women. This was drawn digitally in Adobe Fresco - a programme I love to create artwork in.

Sam provided me with a bank of photos to work with, and after experimenting with a few different images, she chose the below ones you can see on the posters. She loved the colours and the movement of these images.

Through a little back and forth, we developed hand-drawn, playful illustrations that Dance Centred could use across all media platforms.

It was an honour to visually support a project that offers so much care, connection and joy. Huge thanks to Sam Lawrence and Dance Centred for trusting me with this work, and for creating spaces where creativity and community truly move together.
